Snowy Pumping

Woo! 10% raised so far - thanks to everyone who has contributed. Training is still going well, although this evening running in a foot of snow at -2 degrees did lose out to eating crisps whilst watching ‘Peep Show’ DVDs and sitting next to a radiator.

This evening’s lapse aside, I’m managing to keep up a pace of around 8 minutes a mile on training runs, which is decent. Although keeping it up for 5 miles and keeping it up for 26 miles are two entirely different propositions.

Travelling to Barcelona on Saturday to meet my friend Ben and run in the half marathon there - the first serious test of the training. Hopefully it’ll be dry and a little warmer than the UK, although I am concerned my cheese based training diet may not work out as well as I hoped. Haven’t actualy vomited whilst running yet, but it does feel like a matter of ‘when’ rather than ‘if’.

Out of the gate

First donations are in - £10 down, only £1740 to go. I feel strangely optimistic, however, and much happier now the justgiving thing isn’t stuck on zero.

Training run completed today - 5 miles in 39.03. Still very cold out - I wore my training gloves, which rather unfortunately feature large embroidered woollen snow flakes and speak of mental disturbance.  This, when combined with my grimacing running face, heavy breathing and erratic stumbling gait, may have given the regrettable impression of a man losing an internal struggle to avoid performing indecent acts, and certainly alarmed the poor young woman I ran past in the alley by the graveyard at Llandaff Cathedral.

My attempt to make the situation better by smiling at her was ill-judged, to say the least.  I can only apologise to all concerned.

January Blues

Well.  I have so far raised nought pounds and nought pence, which at least means improvement is an achievable goal.  Unfortunately, that means there is £1750 to go, not made easier by the global financial meltdown and1930’s style recession we are currently enjoying.  Asking people to hand over cash while they’re contemplating a future consisting mainly of consuming value cat food whilst huddling around a burning stack of worthless banknotes requires some tact.  Or, even better, guilt and shame.  This is my fundraising card:

Let’s see if I can break my fundraising cherry with it.  Training is going sort of okay, after a boozy and lazy December.  Managed 14 miles yesterday (albeit quite slowly), following my Runner’s World training programme.  I am fairly sure I can manage all four sessions this week.  My  motivation is the embarrassment that would be caused by collapsing with blood coming out of my eyes on the big day.

Russell Runs

This is my marathon blog, an attempt to convince you to give Amnesty International some well deserved money in exchange for me doing permanent damage to my knees and suffering some nasty chafing.  If you’re already convinced, you can splash the cash here:
